The Fastest Way to Improve Your Life: Food For Thought
If you want to improve your life, it starts with realizing this:
You are what you eat.
But not just physically.
You are what you eat mentally, spiritually, emotionally …
It encompasses your entire being.
In the same way your body and general health are a direct reflection of the foods you eat…
(yes, I understand there are exceptions)
The same is true for your mind.
There’s a common saying in the online entrepreneurship and personal development spaces that’s essentially:
“You are a culmination of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”
The basic premise is that the people you surround yourself with most ( which includes both in person and online), has a significant impact on your mindset, beliefs, self-talk, success, attitude…
It affects your entire mental state of well-being, both consciously and subconsciously.
This is because we tend to absorb the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of those around us.
So if you spend the majority of your time and mental energy with and around people, concepts, and information that is uplifting, motivational, inspiring, positive, optimistic, and educational…
You will feel, think, and act in a way that reflects that.
In contrast, the same can be said in the opposite direction.
In my my previous post, Change is Inevitable, I mention Newton’s 3rd Law as an analogy to the results of our life () being a direct reflection of the daily actions we take ().
Output = Input.
If the information, people, and/or environment you surround yourself with are negative, pessimistic, toxic, or de-motivating…
They will bring you down, make it harder to maintain a positive outlook, and have a direct negative impact on your progress and success.
So what’s the fastest way to drastically improve your life?
Drastically change your environment.
Physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally…
Physically change what and who you surround yourself with.
Stop hanging out with people that don’t share your ambitions, have a negative attitude, or project their own limiting beliefs onto you and your dreams.
Start hanging out with people who uplift, motivate, and inspire you.
Don’t have people you can spend time with in person?
With the power of the internet, connecting with like-minded people has never been easier.
There are tons of free online communities where you can connect with like-minded people and achieve the same results as if hanging out with them in person.
(hint: they’re called social media)
Another such example is something like my new mastermind community, the Be More Mastermind Group, where I’ll soon be hosting free live monthly group mastermind video calls.
As James Clear, author of Atomic Habits and father of what is now commonly referred to as “ The Billionaire Algorithm,” says in one of his keynote speeches:
“We want things simply because they are an option.”
So if you remove negative things from your environment, you stop wanting them.
When you add positive things to your environment, you start wanting them.
Want to improve your eating habits?
Throw away junk food so it’s simply not available to you when you decide to go rummaging through the cabinets.
Want to hit the gym more consistently?
Start pre-packing your gym bag at night.
Bring it to work with you, and go straight to the gym after work.
You set yourself up for success by making your environment cater to your goals, and by removing as many obstacles as possible.
Consciously and intentionally change what kinds of information and messaging you’re feeding your brain.
People love to demonize social media because of “the almighty algorithm,”
“It’s the algorithm!! The algorithm did it!! The algorithm hates me!!”
But the truth is, the algorithm feeds you what you show it you want.
If everything you watch and react to is negative, entertainment based, or useless time-killer content… then guess what?
That’s what the algorithm is going to continue to show you!
But, if instead you SEEK OUT content that is educational, motivating, and inspiring…
Then that too is what it will continue to show you!
It shows you what you tell it to show you.
So if you want the algorithm to work in your favor…
Stop following people and stop reacting to content that isn’t helpful!
Pull out your phone right now (or if you’re on it already),
And go unfollow 15 people on your most commonly used social media app that aren’t contributing to your growth.
Then start following people and start reacting to content that is.
It will blow your mind how drastically your feeds change once you start actively seeking out specific types of content and people.
My own personal feeds are full of nothing but educational, inspiring, positive, optimistic content…
And every time I open it, I am motivated to continue pursuing my goals.
Once your feeds begin to change, so will your mindset, and your conscious thoughts, and your subconscious thoughts…
And it’s your subconscious that is responsible for what you consciously see.
Read that again.
It is your subconscious that is responsible for what you consciously see.
(also known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, but we’ll get into that in another post)
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.
If you want to see a different result, you have to do something different.
